I use the one that came on my phone (Samsung Health). Apparently my top speed is 39.8 km/h.

No. It would just remind me how slow I actually am and therefore how fat and out of shape I've become.

I really like my Sigma Rox 5.0, but I don’t use the instantaneous speedo.

To be frank, I really dislike speedos on bikes. I just watch heart rate and cadence. My speed is then a factor of wind, terrain, elevation changes and my own fitness level. It’s my opinion that you’ll be doing yourself a favor in the long run by listening to your body to determine pace instead of chasing a number.

Average speed can be quite useful though- over the course of about three years I’ve worked from 16 to 21 mph average over the same 42 mile route between my house and my office at a heart rate of 150-155. That was a neat change to see.

I just use a $20 bicycle “computer” that shows the time, speed, average speed and distance. Something like this:

On the crappy Canadian Tire Supercycle hybrid bike I bought, I would top out at 32km/h. I bought it on special for $260 (regular price $400).

On a used old Norco road bike I bought not long ago for $100 and then spent another $100 fixing it up with new tubes/tires and other bits, I can hit the low 40km/h range on a flat road.

Also the old Norco road bike is more comfortable for riding longer distances (over 10km) than the shit Crappy Tire Supercycle hybrid.

The Canadian Tire bike looked like it would be good. It even supposedly has an aluminum frame. But it’s actually shit and was a waste of money. I keep it as a 2nd bike. Though I think I might sell it.

Old used steel framed road bikes are better than department store bikes.

Numbers are like, not nature man. Bicycling is pure. Hug your bike, don’t measure it.

I’ve used cyclemeter app for the past couple years. Pretty simple to use, has various ways to chop data and keep track of your training, and can interface with bluetooth speed / cadence / heart rate stuff. By default it uses GPS for speed. Also does elevation which is more accurate if you have an iPhone 6 with the barometer or whatever.

Not quite a Garmin 810, but its waaaay cheaper.

I have a tiny little Schwinn cyclo-computer thing for distance/time/speed, but I haven’t had it on my bike at all this year. I know from before the battery died, my average speed on flat ground is about 22mph, though if I push it, I can keep around 25mph for a few miles, and downhill I reach the limit of my gearing at 38mph.

When I’m cruising and not trying to time my usual loop, I tend to keep around 18mph.

I don’t like having my phone visible when I’m biking, it goes in the pouch under my seat and stays there unless I’m off the bike taking a break. No music either when I’m riding. I like to hear the cars coming for me.

My road bike is an older Scott S5 that I got for a song. Used bikes FTW. Also: 83 km/h on a long mountain descent is my personal best on any frame.

I use a Ford Tempo instrument cluster.

...actually, no, I just use a Garmin Edge 205 with some cardboard shoved in the case because of the battery contact problems they have.

I use oruxmaps. Android only, and it’s not quite a speedometer so much as a GPS tracker that can of course tell you about speed, later. I also mountain bike only...

How did hitting 83km/h feel?

I turn on Strava on my phone, throw it into my bag, and look at it later.

It was on a long mostly straight 1500' descent on relatively clean black top. It was frightening and exhilarating.
